Azelaic Acid Lacto PDRN Serum: The Redness-and-Congestion Serum That Doesn't Make You Choose
Most skin that runs red also runs oily, or congested, or breakout-prone — and most products aimed at one problem make the other worse. Anti-redness formulas tend to be rich and occlusive, which clogs already-congested pores. Anti-congestion formulas tend to be drying and astringent, which inflames already-reactive skin. If your skin does both at once, you've probably spent years alternating between two product categories that were never designed to work together.
The Azelaic Acid Lacto PDRN Serum is IUNIK UNIQUE LAB's answer to that specific bind — the first of the line's three serums, and the one built for skin that's reactive and congested at the same time.
Here's what's actually in it, what the clinical testing found, and who it's genuinely for.
The Problem It's Solving
Azelaic acid has one of the strongest evidence bases of any skincare active for this exact combination — redness and congestion, together. It's been used in dermatology for decades, most commonly at 15–20% in prescription formulations, for rosacea and acne. What's made it hard to access at the everyday-skincare level is formulation: azelaic acid at meaningful concentrations can be difficult to stabilise in a comfortable, non-greasy, non-irritating texture.
The IUNIK version works at 12% — a concentration chosen to sit in the range where the redness-and-congestion benefits are well-documented, without pushing into territory that most sensitive skin can't tolerate for daily use. It's sunflower-derived, which is the plant-sourced route to the same active molecule found in grain-based formulations.
What's Actually in the Formula
Azelaic Acid, 12%. The lead active. Works on multiple fronts at once: it addresses the appearance of redness, refines uneven texture, and helps regulate excess sebum. This is the ingredient doing the corrective work — the reason the serum exists.
Lactobacillus PDRN. Derived from five Lactobacillus strains, this is the barrier-repair half of the formula. PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is one of the most talked-about ingredients in Korean skincare right now, credited with supporting skin regeneration and barrier function. The Lactobacillus source is specifically chosen to soothe sensitised skin while the azelaic acid does its work — the two actives are formulated to support each other rather than compete.
Amino NMF Complex. NMF — natural moisturising factor — is the blend of amino acids and humectants your skin produces on its own to hold water. This complex (built from ingredients including glycine, glutamic acid, serine, alanine, arginine, threonine, and proline) replenishes what's naturally there, keeping hydration levels steady while the active ingredients work.
Zinc PCA + Zinc Hyaluronate. The dual-zinc system is what lets this serum treat oily and dehydrated skin as the same problem instead of opposite ones. Zinc controls excess sebum; zinc hyaluronate simultaneously boosts hydration. Most oil-control ingredients dry the skin out as a side effect — this pairing is formulated specifically to avoid that trade-off.
Ceramide, beta-glucan, and panthenol round out the barrier-support layer, the same trio that runs through the core IUNIK range.
The result, on paper, reads like a lot of active ingredients working in different directions. In practice, the formula is built so they compound toward the same outcome: calmer, clearer, better-balanced skin, without the greasy-versus-stripped trade-off that usually comes with treating both redness and congestion at once.
What the Texture Actually Feels Like
12% azelaic acid has a reputation for being difficult to wear — sticky, tacky, slow to absorb. The IUNIK formulation is deliberately built against that reputation: a lightweight, refreshing, watery texture that minimises stickiness despite the active concentration, absorbing to a smooth, comfortable finish.
This matters more than it might sound like it should. A product this well-formulated on paper is only useful if people actually apply it consistently, and a serum that feels unpleasant on the skin gets used inconsistently no matter how good the science is.
What the Clinical Testing Found
IUNIK ran this formula through independent testing at the P&K Skin Clinical Research Center, with 20 adult subjects aged 19–59, over a test period from late January to late February 2026. The measured results:
- 20.8% reduction in pore count
- 11.69% reduction in pore area
- 10.71% reduction in pore depth
Alongside the pore measurements, the testing covered acne-prone skin suitability, deep hydration, and oil-water balance — with the formula confirmed suitable for acne-prone skin, and improvements measured across skin texture, hydration, oil-moisture balance, and barrier resilience against external stress.
Two things worth being precise about, because the clinical language is specific for a reason:
On the redness claim: the testing specifies that "redness" in this context refers to dryness-induced redness, not redness associated with a diagnosed skin condition like rosacea or dermatitis. If you're managing a diagnosed inflammatory skin condition, this serum may still be a useful addition to your routine, but it isn't a substitute for dermatologist-guided treatment, and the clinical claims here shouldn't be read as covering that use case.
On the pore results: the testing notes these are measurable, temporary effects — the standard and honest framing for any topical cosmetic pore-appearance claim. Pores don't permanently shrink; what changes is the visible appearance, texture, and oil-moisture balance around them, and that improvement is maintained with continued use rather than being a one-time fix.
Who This Is Actually For
Three groups this serum is built around:
Sensitive skin with visible redness. If your skin flushes easily, reacts to products that don't bother other people, and shows redness that doesn't have an obvious trigger, this is the primary use case. The dual formulation — azelaic acid for the redness itself, Lactobacillus PDRN for the barrier underneath it — addresses both the symptom and the underlying resilience issue.
Visible pores and excess sebum. If your skin runs oily, particularly around the T-zone, and you've noticed pores becoming more visible or texture becoming rougher, the zinc system and azelaic acid's sebum-regulating effect are the relevant mechanisms.
Skin with disrupted oil-moisture balance. The specific profile of skin that's simultaneously oily in some areas and dehydrated in others — a combination that's genuinely hard to treat with most single-focus products, because addressing one side of the imbalance usually worsens the other.
If none of these describe your skin, the other two UNIQUE LAB serums — one for tone and brightness, one for firmness and elasticity — are likely a better starting point. This one earns its place specifically for the redness-and-congestion combination.
How to Introduce It
Azelaic acid at 12% is a meaningful concentration, and the right approach is gradual introduction rather than diving straight to twice-daily use.
Initial use: 1–2 times per week, 1–2 drops. Apply after toner, spreading gently until absorbed.
After adjustment: twice daily (morning and evening), up to 5 drops maximum.
Watch how your skin responds during the first two weeks. Most people tolerate the gradual introduction without issue, given the barrier-supportive ingredients built into the formula — but any new active deserves a proper adjustment period, and rushing to twice-daily use in week one isn't the right way to introduce it, regardless of how gentle the formulation is designed to be.
What to Pair It With
The serum is designed to sit within the broader IUNIK barrier-support ecosystem rather than as an isolated treatment.
For the cleansing step, the Beta-Glucan Barrier Ampoule Cleanser keeps the routine's barrier logic consistent from the first step. For the moisturising step, the Beta-Glucan Daily Moisture Cream provides the lightweight hydration layer that holds the serum's work in place without adding to congestion.
Both are natural pairings — same barrier-first philosophy, same ingredient logic, layered to compound rather than compete.
The Bigger Picture
This is the first of three deep-dive posts on the UNIK UNIQUE LAB launch. If you haven't seen the introduction to the full line, it covers all three serums and how to choose between them if redness-and-congestion isn't your primary concern. The other two — one built around tranexamic acid and niacinamide for tone and brightness, one built around Volufiline and peptides for firmness and elasticity — will get the same treatment in the coming weeks.
For now: if your skin runs red, reactive, oily, and congested all at once, and you've been choosing between products that treat one side of that at the expense of the other, this is the serum built specifically so you don't have to.
