The Correct Order to Layer Your Skincare

(And Why It Actually Matters)

You've got the products. Now you're standing in front of the bathroom mirror wondering: does any of this actually matter if I apply things in the wrong order?

Yes — it genuinely does. Skincare layering isn't gatekeeping, it's chemistry. Apply products in the wrong sequence and you either dilute their effectiveness or prevent them from absorbing altogether. Get it right, and everything works harder.

Here's the logic behind the order, step by step.

The Golden Rule

Lightest to Heaviest

The guiding principle of skincare layering is simple: go from the thinnest, most water-based textures to the thickest, most occlusive ones. Lighter products need direct contact with the skin to penetrate properly. Heavier ones sit on top and seal everything in. Apply a thick cream first and you've essentially blocked the door for everything else.

Before any layering can begin, you need a clean canvas. A gentle cleanser removes the debris of the day (or night) without stripping the natural oils your barrier depends on. You're not trying to squeaky-clean — you're creating a neutral starting point.

If you wore SPF or makeup, a double cleanse is worth doing: start with an oil cleanser to dissolve sunscreen and surface buildup, follow with a gentle foam or gel cleanser to clear the rest. If you're cleansing without SPF or makeup in the mix — a morning cleanse, for instance — a single mild foam is all you need.

Not sure where to start? IUNIK's Calendula and Centella Double Cleansing Duos pair the right oil and foam together by skin type, making it easy to get the double cleanse right from day one.

A Quick Note on Oils

Facial oils sit after moisturiser but before SPF in a morning routine — or as the final step at night. Because they're lipid-based rather than water-based, they help seal in the layers below without the opacity of a balm. Use them sparingly and after all your water-based products.

Does the Order Always Matter This Much?

Does the Order Always Matter This Much?

For the most part, yes — but context matters. If you're using a simple two- or three-step routine, the stakes are lower. Where order becomes critical is when you're layering multiple actives (e.g. vitamin C, niacinamide, retinol) or trying to maximise the benefit of more targeted treatments. The more complex the routine, the more the sequence matters.

The good news: once you understand the logic — lightest to heaviest, water-based before oil-based, treatment before protection — it becomes intuitive. You stop following rules and start understanding your skin.
