Volufiline Grape PDRN Serum: Firming Skincare That Doesn't Ask You to Tolerate Retinol
Most effective firming ingredients come with a cost. Retinol works, but it takes weeks of irritation and peeling to get there, and a lot of skin never fully adjusts. Strong peptide serums can be inert without the right delivery system. The category is full of products promising density and elasticity that either don't do enough or do too much to skin that can't tolerate the trade-off.
The Volufiline Grape PDRN Serum is IUNIK UNIQUE LAB's answer to that gap — the second of the line's three serums, built for skin that wants genuine firming work without the retinol tax.
Here's what's actually in it, what the clinical testing covered, and who it's for.
The Problem It's Solving
Skin loses density and elasticity gradually — not as a single event, but as a slow decline in the collagen and structural support that used to hold everything plump and bouncy. The standard answer is retinol, and retinol genuinely works. But it also comes with a well-documented adjustment period: dryness, peeling, sun sensitivity, and a "purge" phase that puts a lot of people off before they see the benefit.
The alternative approach — the one this serum is built around — is to support the same structural goals (volume, density, collagen, elasticity) through ingredients that build rather than provoke. Volufiline, PDRN, bakuchiol, and a six-peptide complex, working together rather than through the single-ingredient intensity of retinol.
What's Actually in the Formula
Volufiline™, 5%. The lead active, and the ingredient the whole formula is built around. This is a 100% French-origin ingredient from Sederma, powered by Sarsaparilla root, clinically shown to plump skin from within and restore elasticity over time. Unlike ingredients that work by resurfacing or exfoliating, Volufiline works on skin's underlying volume — the reason skin looks structurally different as it ages isn't just surface texture, it's a loss of the fullness underneath, and this is the ingredient targeting that directly.
Black Sapphire Grape PDRN. The barrier-and-regeneration half of the formula. PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is one of the most talked-about ingredients in Korean skincare right now, credited with supporting skin regeneration and collagen stimulation. The Black Sapphire Grape source is specific to this serum in the UNIQUE LAB line — each of the three serums uses a different natural PDRN source, chosen to complement that serum's particular focus. Here, the grape-derived PDRN works to regenerate skin and stimulate collagen production for visibly denser, bouncier skin.
Bakuchiol. The babchi-seed-derived retinol alternative, and the ingredient that makes this serum genuinely different from a standard firming formula. Bakuchiol targets fine lines and loss of firmness through mechanisms that overlap meaningfully with retinol's effects, without the irritation, dryness, or sun-sensitivity that comes with traditional retinol. This is the ingredient doing a version of retinol's job, minus retinol's cost.
Six-peptide synergy, each targeting a distinct concern. Rather than a single peptide doing general "firming" work, the formula assigns each peptide a specific job:
- Firmness Care — Copper Tripeptide-1
- Wrinkle Care — Acetyl Hexapeptide-8
- Skin Density Care — Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4
- Skin Barrier Support — Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7
- Pore & Skin Texture Care — Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5
Together, the six peptides boost collagen formation for smoother, firmer-looking skin — but the specificity of assigning each peptide its own job (rather than one ingredient trying to do everything) is what IUNIK is calling "6 peptides in perfect sync."
What the Texture Actually Feels Like
The formula is described as a soft glow texture — fast-absorbing, delivering deep hydration with a dewy rather than matte finish. This matters for a firming serum specifically, because a lot of firming and anti-aging formulas lean heavy and rich, which can feel counterproductive on skin that's otherwise behaving normally and doesn't need an occlusive layer at the serum step. A lighter, glow-finish texture means this serum layers cleanly into a normal routine rather than requiring you to restructure everything around it.
What the Testing Found
IUNIK ran this formula through independent testing at the P&K Skin Research Center, with 20 adult subjects aged 19–59, over a test period from late December 2025 to mid-February 2026. The testing measured five specific pore-appearance metrics — pore count, area, and depth, pore volume, and pore elasticity (the angle of elasticity) — limited to pores of measurable size:
- +65% visible pore volume
- -48% pore elasticity
- +5% visible pore count
- -29% visible pore area
- -30% visible pore depth
Alongside these five figures, the broader testing covered a wider set of outcomes: improved appearance of fine lines around the eyes, enhanced surface and deep skin elasticity, lifting improvement for sagging skin, improved overall skin density and firmness, and boosted radiance and glow. The formula is also non-comedogenic tested, EVE Vegan certified, and derma-tested for hyposensitivity with a five-star, no-tears rating.
Who This Is Actually For
IUNIK's own positioning names three groups directly:
Visibly enlarged pores and loss of firmness. If pores have become more noticeable and skin doesn't feel as taut as it used to, this is the core use case — the combination the pore-metric testing was specifically designed around.
Skin that looks flat and lacks bounce. The "volume and bounce" language isn't just marketing — it points to a genuine textural quality, the difference between skin that looks structurally full and skin that's lost some of its underlying density. If your skin looks tired or flat rather than lined, this is often the more accurate description of what's actually happening.
Sensitive skin seeking effective functional care. This is the group the whole UNIQUE LAB line is built around — skin that wants results-driven actives but has been let down by formulations that couldn't deliver both effectiveness and tolerance at once.
Beyond IUNIK's own framing, two more specific groups this serum suits:
Anyone who can't tolerate retinol. If you've tried retinol and the purging, peeling, or sensitivity made it unsustainable, bakuchiol paired with Volufiline and PDRN is the alternative built to deliver comparable structural benefits without that cost.
Anyone recovering from over-actives who still wants anti-aging work. If your skin has been through a stretch of aggressive treatments and needs to rebuild, but you don't want to abandon firming and elasticity work entirely, this formula's gentler mechanism makes it compatible with a recovery-focused routine in a way that retinol wouldn't be.
If your primary concern is redness and congestion, or tone and hyperpigmentation, the other two UNIQUE LAB serums are better starting points — this one earns its place specifically for the firming-and-elasticity conversation.
How to Use It
The instructions are simple: after toner, apply an appropriate amount and gently spread over the skin until absorbed. Morning or evening.
Unlike the Azelaic Acid serum, which requires a careful gradual introduction because of its active concentration, this formula's gentler mechanism means most people can incorporate it into a routine without the same adjustment-period caution — though as with any new product, it's worth watching how your skin responds over the first couple of weeks, particularly if you have known sensitivities to any of the peptide or botanical ingredients listed.
What to Pair It With
IUNIK's own cross-sell pairing for this serum is the Beta-Glucan 3X Barrier Cream and the Beta Glucan Barrier Sunscreen — both sensible pairings for a firming-focused routine.
The 3X Barrier Cream is the right moisturising step to follow this serum with, particularly in the evening: rich enough to support overnight barrier repair, which complements the collagen and elasticity work happening at the serum step. For morning use, the Beta Glucan Barrier Sunscreen matters more than usual with this serum in your routine — any firming and elasticity work is undermined by unprotected UV exposure, and the added hydration in this particular sunscreen keeps the whole routine consistent in its barrier-first logic.
The Bigger Picture
This is the second of three deep-dive posts on the UNIK UNIQUE LAB launch. If you haven't read the introduction to the full line or the Azelaic Acid Lacto PDRN Serum deep-dive, both cover the other angles of the line — redness and congestion, and how to choose between all three serums if firming isn't your primary concern. The third, built around tranexamic acid and niacinamide for tone and brightness, is coming next.
For now: if retinol has never worked for your skin, and you want genuine firming and elasticity support without the trade-off, this is the serum built specifically for that gap.
